It has been another extremely busy but exciting week at Ismaili Mail, filled with lots of news, stories, videos and pictures of His Highness the Aga Khan’s Golden Jubilee Visit to Canada. In view of the significant number of posts published at Ismaili Mail covering Hazar Imam’s Visit to Canada, we have decided to summarize all of the news/stories from the Canada Visit in a separate review.

Below is the summarization of the news and stories from around the world published during the last two weeks:

Avignon conference Before departing for Canada, His Highness the Aga Khan delivered a speech on November 16, 2008 at the Palais des Papes in Avignon, southern France during a forum on the topic Culture, a growth factor to be held until November 18. The Forum brought together 250 key players from the economic, cultural and media sectors, along with public authority. representatives of different countries.

nwAfzalprofileZED In our Ismaili Muslims in the News this week, we have featured Natasha Somani and Parinbanu Esmail, who have both been nominated for the YMCA Calgary Peace Award Nominees. Alykhan Velshi, who spent the election campaign in the Conservative war room doing rapid response, has returned to become Mr. Kenney’s director of communications and parliamentary affairs, a position he held during the last session before a brief stint in John Baird’s ministerial office. Congratulations to Ryerson graduate student Afzal Huda, the first winner of the Innovative Storytellers Award, connecting content, new technologies and audiences. In Houston, Farah Ladha, 17 and Alysa Punjwani, 13 volunteered at the Thanksgiving Day Superfeast, meanwhile Dr Zaheer Lakhani works at tapping Alberta’s generosity. Zabeen Hirji, Executive Vice-President & Chief Human Resources Officer at the Royal Bank of Canada is one of the winners of Canada’s Most Powerful Women in 2008 Award.

This week’s Ismaili Muslim Authors features Farhan Devji, a sports journalist and author, who has always been a hockey fan and a hockey player, but when he realized he wasn’t going to make it to the NHL, he switched his passion to writing about hockey.

2008nov_phak_schwarzenegger_s In USA, California Governors’ Summit will partner with AKDN which is working to improve living conditions in the developing world through social and economic development, environment and culture. Prince Hussain Aga Khan, accompanied by his wife, Princess Khaliya Aga Khan, Dr. Tom Kessinger, Deputy Chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) and Dr. Mahmoud Eboo, President of the Aga Khan Council for the USA, represented His Highness the Aga Khan at the Governors’ Global Climate Summit held in Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on November 18-19. We have a video of Dr Tom Kessinger’s address at the Summit. In Georgia, the Aga Khan Youth and Sports organization in conjunction with American Red Cross organised a blood and bone marrow drive on Nov. 30 at the South Jamatkhana worship center near Peachtree City.

From Africa, the roll out of Telemedicine plan for Kenya health sector will go hand in hand with the implementation of Health Management Information System (HMIS), which is meant to interlink all government health facilities.

In Central Asia, the Pakistan government has set aside funds for poverty alleviation in the province. The Water and Sanitation Extension Programme (WASEP), an initiative of Aga Khan Planning and Building Service, Pakistan (AKPBS,P) was declared as one of the twelve winners of the Dubai International Award for Best Practices (DIABP). The Mountain Societies Development Support Programme (MSDSP KG) an initiative of the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) organized a Book Festival in Gulcho village of Alai rayon, Osh Oblast on November 20, 2008. A training seminar for Afghan school teachers, organised by GBAO Institute for Improvement of Professional Education in cooperation with education Program of the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) Afghanistan was held in Khorog on November 19. Studies from Aga Khan University, Department of Pathology add new findings in the area of dengue fever and Aga Khan University held its 21st Convocation ceremony on November 29, 2008, marking the graduation of 276 students in the fields of medicine, nursing and education.

Prince Amyn01 From Europe, Prince Amyn Aga Khan, chairman of the Aga Khan Fund for economic development executive committee, speaks at the 10th German World Bank Forum in Frankfurt on November 20, 2008 in Frankfurt am Main. The Aga Khan Foundation in Lisbon, Portugal, hosted the conference “Challenges of Diversity” on November 25 to address challenges in relationship of people with disabilities in the labor market.

In Kuwait, the opening of the Museum of Islamic Art was organised in collaboration with the Aga Khan Trust for Culture and other leading cultural institutions from around the world. In other news, The first volume of the English translation of the Great Islamic was unveiled in Tehran on Tuesday. The Institute of Ismaili Studies (IIS) in collaboration with the Center for the Great Islamic Encyclopedia in Tehran developed the project under the general direction of Professor Wilferd Madelung, Senior Research Fellow at IIS and Professor Emeritus at Oxford University, who has worked on the English version of Encyclopedia Islamica for several years.
