UN Syria: Second annual Global Handwashing Day in schools

HWDayOctober 15, 2009 – Everyone can make a difference in the “Hand Washing protect us from illnesses” campaign

Today marks the Second Global Hand Washing Day, celebrated in over 85 countries across five continents in an effort to mobilize and motivate millions around the world to wash their hands with soap.

In cooperation with School Health Directorate and The European Commission, UNICEF is supporting health education activities in 500 schools in Syria. UNICEF is distributing 5000 soaps and 135 000 liquid soap to school children in addition to educational materials that encourage children to wash their hands with water and soap. This will reach approximately half a million school children, of whom about 10% of them are Iraqi children.

–snip– UNICEF in collaboration with School Health Directorate, the European Commission and Agha Khan Foundation is celebrating the day with the students of Awaied Alia elementary school in the village of Tal Al Dura in Salamieh City today.
