From L to R Premier of Alberta Hon Ralph Klein, Steven Yu
and Founding member Mary Hassanali

I have just registered as an ambassador to raise funds at the World Partnership Walk on June 10, 2012 in Calgary and I hope I can count on your support.

Why am I participating in this walk?

To recognize two individuals who had helped me succeed in starting the very first Partnership Walk in 1985 from the Prairies almost 27 years ago. Today World Partnership Walk is Canada’s largest annual event dedicated to raising funds and increasing awareness to fight global poverty.

Who are these two people?

Ralph Klein

Ralph Klein

Ralph was the mayor of Calgary in 1985 and later became the premier of Alberta. Ralph’s outstanding commitment and passion in his support was demonstrated through his personal attendance at the walk. His presence helped attract a large turnout of Calgarians along with the news media’s presence to cover the event in its initial years. On two occasions, when I was shopping at the Lakeview Grocery store in the past, I bumped into Ralph and the very first question he asked me if I was taking care of global poverty. I was quite touched that he did not just remember the event as the guest of honour at the partnership walk but also the people that were connected with the event.

Carol Pilkington

Carol Pilkington

Carol, a high school teacher who taught with me at James Fowler High School was very influential in promoting the walk at the grass root level. She spoke passionately to the students and educators in creating awareness of the basic needs of the third world countries. In 2005, Carol trekked Sayhydris mountain in India and 2006 Madagascar with 80 hikers from Europe, Canada and USA for Focus Humanitarian Assistance, raising funds for the victims of natural disasters around the world. She always demonstrated by action that any journey begins with a small step.

What do I need from you?

Your sponsorship for the partnership Walk, 2012.

I will match your donation $ to $ up to the maximum of $ 15,000 of my own money. This means that your contribution doubles with my matching and funds raised by your sponsorship will also help AKFC to leverage additional support from major donors like CIDA. This means that every dollar raised is multiplied many times over with matching.

Where do you go to sponsor me?

Please note that 100% of the funds raised by the World Partnership Walk go directly to fund international development projects – not one cent is spent on administration.

In conclusion, I wish to share with you that Ralph and Carol are both in a long term care facility fighting dementia but their legacy lives on.
