Theatre Actor: Kareem Bandealy

Our guy – the American – in J.T. Rogers’ play “Blood and Gifts,” about the United States’ clandestine effort to blunt the Russian invasion of Afghanistan in the 1980s, is a CIA agent. We see the unfolding events through his eyes. But the character who elicits our sympathy and commands our imagination is an Afghan warlord called Abdullah Khan. He is made credible flesh and elusive spirit at TimeLine Theatre in a riveting performance by Kareem Bandealy, who says his portrait reflects both his own cultural heritage and the desperation that drives this unpredictable warrior.

“I am from Pakistan, so I’ve long been familiar with that culture,” says Bandealy, whose family moved to the U.S. when he was 2 years old.

This exhibition celebrates continuity and change in one of the city’s most important immigrant communities. By exploring the artistry, festivity and ritual associated with Indian weddings in Houston, Anointed and Adorned captures the beauty that resides in the old and accustomed, and the appeal of the new and surprising. Indian weddings offer celebrants the opportunity to recreate the traditions of their mother country and craft artful observances reflecting their new environment. Featuring photography by Sohil Maknojia and community-based research by Rati Ramadas Girish, Anointed and Adorned tells the story of the artistic traditions and practices that inform one of the most important ritual and festive moments in Indian life.

Vancouver-based DJ talks about his music, his collaborations and his dream projects

Juno nominated A-Slam has come a long way from the streets of East Vancouver where he grew up. In addition to being nominated for one of the highest honors in the Canadian music industry, he has also won the top spot in the International Songwriting contest for the single For You – a song that was inspired by and dedicated to his mother – “She is my world,” he says.

A professional DJ, artist and producer A-SLAM – his original name is Hussein Alidina – has toured with the likes of H-Dhami, Imran Khan, Juggy D and Mumzy in the past 6 years. He has opened for Jay Sean, Malkit Singh, Apache Indian, Fat Joe, Sweat Shop Union, JoSH, Raghav and Aman Hayer and has performed alongside Stereo Nation in Downtown Toronto’s Rogers Centre.

Adam Nanji is an emerging singer/songwriter from Vancouver, British Columbia. His unique style is rooted in folk music tinged with pop/alternative influences. The music and lyrics deal with longing hearts, a young man’s blues, and the discovery of new. Adam acquired an intrigued passion for music and life at an early age. He provoked it by listening to a wide variety of influential artists such as Muddy Waters to TV on The Radio. At age 11, Adams father introduced him to Jimi Hendrix and everything changed.

Adam knew from that point on music was going to be the most important thing in his life. Years later Adam took his acoustic guitar and found himself in a Blues/Rock group with four of his best friends; the group was known as The Dazed. Their first show was a pivotal moment in Adams journey. The young artist said in an interview “to our surprise the sounds we made actually sounded like the songs they were supposed to; for once. We made people dance; we made people smile, and it felt amazing.”

What measures did people take to preserve and pass on their beliefs and practices from generation to generation?

This portrait of an Ismaili Muslim family living in the Pamir Mountains in Tajikistan explores how they practiced religion under the watchful eyes of Soviet officials and how they passed on their religious beliefs and practices during the Soviet Union’s repression of religion. It also shows the reinvigoration of their beliefs in post-Soviet times.

Aleem Karmali’s mission is to combine his creative talents with a strong academic foundation in order to produce creative, balanced and intelligent films about Islam and Muslim societies.

Aleem is a writer, director, editor and producer, and has been working on professional video and audio productions since 1997.

Writer, Executive Producer and Lead Actor, Farah Merani, is a graduate of Trinity College, University of Toronto and recently completed an MA from the Drama Centre London, London UK. Upon returning to Toronto in 2012, she joined the Blue Flame Collective and is now the Lead Producer on the 2013 Slate entitled The Village Global. She is also presently producing a sketch comedy web-series with Octagon Media Group and is developing her first feature film, Goodnight, Amherst, slated for production in 2015 under her production company, Lifeguard Productions. As a professional actress, she has performed on stage and screen on both sides of the Atlantic and will be appearing in season 4 of CTV’s The Listener.

Filmmaker and human rights activist, Davlat Khudonazarov speaks about the cinema of the legendary Indian director Satyajit Ray and its universality.

Davlat Khudonazarov sees a “dewdrop just outside his house, a dewdrop on a little blade of grass, a dewdrop which reflects in its convexity the whole universe”, the dewdrop of Rabindranath Tagore’s poem written for the young Satyajit Ray. Film critics observe a connection between the simple human settings of Khudonazarov’s films and Ray’s poignant depictions. As for the Tajik filmmaker himself, he considers the Bengali director a master auteur, an Ustad.

I wrote “Century of the Volunteer” to rally, mobilize and energize volunteers. Its message is one of renewal, purpose and inclusiveness, and its tone is celebratory. I warmly invite volunteer leaders of all strifes to download the song and use it in support their goals of promoting volunteerism. Possible uses include: playing the audio at volunteer recruitment or recognition events; using it as the background music for video footage or a slide show that shows expressions of volunteerism; or adopting it as a theme song for young volunteers to learn and sing as a group.
