Departing Mumbai early in the morning, His Highness the Aga Khan arrived in Ahmedabad today. There he met with the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Mr Narendra Modi and the Governor of the state, Mr Nawal Kishore Sharma.

In the afternoon, His Highness travelled by helicopter to the small Gujarat town of Sidhpur for the first of three Golden Jubilee Darbars. The Jamat from across the state of Gujarat, had travelled to Sidhpur for this Darbar which was held at a site specially constructed to accommodate over 50 000 people.

Following the Darbar, His Highness returned to Mumbai.

This morning His Highness the Aga Khan visited the Prince Aly Khan Hospital in Mumbai.

Established in 1945, the hospital was named after His Highness’s father, Prince Aly Khan, who donated the land upon which it was built. Thousands of members of the community gathered outside the hospital, located on the Aga Hall Estate, to welcome their Imam.

During his visit, His Highness toured the facility. He also met with the Senior Management of the hospital and the Directors of the Aga Khan Health Services in India.

From the hospital, His Highness went to the Diamond Jubilee High School in Mumbai.

Originally established in 1947 following the Diamond Jubilee of Imam Sultan Mahomed Shah (Aga Khan III), the school was last visited by His Highness the Aga Khan IV in 1958. In 2007, it moved to a new site which was inaugurated by Princess Zahra.

During his visit, His Highness reviewed the school facilities and met briefly with the Directors of the Aga Khan Education Service in India.

High-level meet: Prince Aga Khan, spiritual leader of Shia Ismaili Muslims, with Governor Narayan Dutt Tiwari at Raj Bhavan in Hyderabad on Wednesday

HYDERABAD: Prince Aga Khan, spiritual leader of the Ismailis, who arrived here on Wednesday on a five-hour visit to the city, met Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and reviewed the progress of the work of Aga Khan Academy coming up at Maheshwaram. Dr. Reddy requested him to expedite the work, while assuring the Government’s help and assistance.

Earlier, after arriving here by a special flight from New Delhi, the Prince drove straight to Maheshwaram to inspect the Academy’s work. He left for Mumbai in the evening.

Prince Aga Khan, who arrived by a special flight from New Delhi on a brief visit to the city, today met Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy.

Welcoming the spiritual leader, Dr Reddy and Aga Khan briefly reviewed the progress of the Aga Khan Academy coming up on the outskirts of the city.

The Chief Minister requested the Prince to expedite the prestigious nursing faculty project, which he was planning to set up in association with Mc Master University in the state.

Dr Reddy assured him all help and assistance from the state government in this regard. His Highness the Aga Khan, later called on Governor N D Tiwari at the Raj Bhavan, who extended his good wishes for the project. After a five-hour stay in the city, His Highness the Aga Khan left for Mumbai, an official release said.

The Aga Khan, the spiritual leader of Shia Ismaili Muslims, Tuesday called on President Pratibha Patil and discussed a host of issues, including reforms in madrassa education and the conservation of monuments in India.

The Aga Khan, who is on a week-long trip to India, met Patil for about half-hour. According to official sources, the 70-year-old leader - also known as Prince Karim Aga Khan IV - spoke enthusiastically about the need for reforms in Islamic religious schools. ‘He talked about the possibility of replicating a programme of reform of madrassa education at the Aga Khan’s Educational Institution in Hyderabad,’ said an official.

The Ismaili leader also visited Humayun’s Tomb and Sundar Nursery to survey the progress of a project for the revitalization of several cultural heritage buildings located in Nizamuddin area in the heart of the capital. The Aga Khan Trust for Culture and the Aga Khan Foundation forged a partnership with several Indian government agencies, including the Archaeological Survey of India, for the preservation of these historic buildings in 2004. The project is modelled on the Bagh-e-Babur integrated conservation project being implemented by the Aga Khan Trust in Kabul, Afghanistan. He also met Leader of Opposition L.K. Advani. The Aga Khan arrived here Monday on a visit that marks his 50th year as the imam of over 25 million Shia Ismailis worldwide.

New Delhi, May 12: Muslim spiritual leader Aga Khan on Monday met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh here and discussed the state of minorities in the country.

During the meeting, Singh is understood to have apprised the Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims about the steps being taken by the government to improve the lot of the minorities.

Khan, who arrived here this morning on a week-long visit to commemorate his 50th year as the 49th Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims, also met President Pratibha Patil and Vice President Hamid Ansari.

After his two-day stay here, 71-year-old spiritual leader of millions of Ismaili Muslims will travel to Hyderabad on Wednesday where he had laid the foundation stone of the Aga Khan academy about two years back.

Aga Khan is also scheduled to visit Mumbai and Ahmedabad later in the week and depart for a tour of Bangladesh on Monday next.

The Aga Khan Foundation set up by the spiritual leader is involved in many philanthropic activities and had played a key role in the renovation of the Humayun’s tomb in the capital.

The foundation runs educational institutions including universities in countries like the UK, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Syria and Egypt.

Official coverage, May 12, 2008 - His Highness the Aga Khan landed in New Delhi, commencing his eight-day Golden Jubilee visit of India. He was received at the airport by the Minister of State for External Affairs, Mr E. Ahmad, the Foreign Secretary, Mr Shivshankar Menon, the Chief of Protocol for the Government of India, Mr Sunil Lal, and leaders of the community in India.

During the course of the day, His Highness the Aga Khan met with the Minister of State for External Affairs, Mr E. Ahmad, the Honourable Vice President, Mr Mohammad Hamid Ansari, the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh and the Chairperson of the ruling United Progressive Alliance, Mrs Sonia Gandhi.

The Aga Khan, who arrived here this morning, is scheduled to meet President Pratibha Patil, Vice President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress President Sonia Gandhi and other leaders.

During his eight-day visit to India, the Aga Khan will also visit Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra to participate in programmes being organised in connection with the Ismaili community’s commemoration of his Golden Jubilee, the Aga Khan’s 50th year as Imam of the community.

The Aga Khan will depart for Dhaka from Mumbai on May 19.

He will be in the capital for two days, during which he will meet President Pratibha Patil, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Vice President Hamid Ansari, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Leader of Opposition L.K. Advani.

The Aga Khan will then move on to Hyderabad, Mumbai and Ahmedabad and leave for Dhaka May 19, the ministry of external affairs said here.

The visit marks the Aga Khan’s 50th year as imam of over 25 million Shia Ismailis worldwide.

The 70-year-old leader - also known as Prince Karim Aga Khan IV - succeeded his grandfather, Sir Sultan Mahomed Shah Aga Khan - at age 20 in 1957, becoming the community’s 49th imam.

The Aga Khan last visited India in September 2006, when he laid the foundation of the Aga Khan Academy for Excellence in Education in Hyderabad.

Earlier, in 2004 the spiritual leader gave away the Aga Khan Award for Architecture at a presentation ceremony at Humayun’s Tomb here.
