Complete content of His Highness the Aga Khan’s remarks at the Signing Ceremony for the 'Agreement of Co-operation' between the Ismaili Imamat and Province of Alberta (Edmonton, Canada)On Wednesday, October 24, 2012, the Ismaili Imamat and the Province of Alberta signed an historic ‘Agreement of Co-operation’, the first of its kind for the Ismaili Imamat with a Canadian province.

After the ceremony, His Highness the Aga Khan made a few remarks about the intent of these agreements and on the fragility of governments in the developing world, however only incomplete portions of his remarks have been reported in various news outlets and other sources. The Ismaili: Mawlana Hazar Imam signs agreement between the Ismaili Imamat and the Government of AlbertaEdmonton, 24 October 2012 — Mawlana Hazar Imam and Alberta Premier Alison Redford signed an Agreement of Cooperation today between the Ismaili Imamat and the Government of Alberta. The agreement facilitates further collaboration in the areas of health sciences, education, the environment, forestry and natural resources management, culture, and private sector and economic development.

Speaking at the signing, Premier Redford noted that the agreement will enable the Imamat and the AKDN “to share and learn together not only for the benefit of people in our province, but more importantly, I believe, for people around the world.”

The Premier acknowledged the AKDN’s commitment to civil society, education, health care, and to improving gender equality in societies and “circumstances that are very difficult.” Closer to home, she also noted important contributions made by members of the Ismaili community in Alberta, particularly towards multi-generational projects.

Premier Redford and Aga Khan sign co-operation agreementOn a day Premier Alison Redford said “she would remember for the rest of (her) life, the premier and His Highness the Aga Khan signed an agreement of co-operation Wednesday at Government House.

The agreement signals a symbolic partnership between the province with the Aga Khan, the spiritual leader of Shia Ismaili Muslims. By signing it, the two parties pledged to work together on issues such as health sciences, education, economic development and culture both in Alberta and in countries served by the Aga Khan Development Network, a charitable organization the Aga Khan founded that works to improve the lives of people in the developing world.
