At least 62 people have been killed and 170 injured since suspected al-Shabab militants attacked the Westgate shopping centre in Nairobi on Saturday.
Many of the victims have been treated at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi.
Asmita Gillani, who runs hospital, told the Today programme’s Evan Davis that “the majority of our victims have suffered gunshot wounds”.
She also described the support of local communities, saying over a thousand people had volunteered to donate blood.
Local women “from all social economic groups gathering outside with bread baskets” to give to those who were waiting to give blood, “to be part of the response,” she added.
