Hundred year old cupboard excavated from Wazir Khan Mosque

Ancient cupboard excavated from Wazir Khan MosqueLAHORE: The Walled City of Lahore Authority on Friday held a public opening of an ancient cupboard it had found in the outer walls of the Wazir Khan Mosque during excavation.

The afore-mentioned cupboard appears to be some hundred years old. The cupboard, which is now the property of the Walled City of Lahore Authority, was found some weeks ago, and since then, the authorities had been trying to open it, but could not.

Since the recovery of the ancient cupboard, various rumours had been going around as to its contents.

Muhammad Majid Khan (Lahore Museum), Shakoor Allah Khan (Aga Khan Cultural Service Pakistan), Malik Maqsood (archaeology deputy director), Abdul Ghafoor Zuberi (Auqaaf additional secretary), Ayaaz Ahmad (Auqaaf manager), Rashid Ahmed (Akbari Gate Police Station sub-inspector), Mohammad Abbas (Wazir Khan Mosque Chowk president) and Farooq (Wazir Khan Mosque Bazaar president) were present at the opening of the cupboard, along with members of the media.

The upper compartment of the cupboard contained cash and financial records of a shop belonging to a certain Ismail, who owned one of the shops in the Wazir Khan Mosque.

The documents are from 1939 –1950. The lower compartment was found to be empty, while another safe was found from within the cupboard.
