February 27, 2014 – Canada’s Prime Minister, Stephen Harper announces a new Protocol of Understanding with His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan recognizing the Ismaili Imamat contributions to humanity. The Ismaili Imamat is a 1400 year old institution representing the spiritual office of the Ismaili Imams stretching back to the time of Hazrat Ali the first Imam.
The agreement seeks to create a common framework for Canada and the Ismaili Imamat – a partnership to work together in achieving common goals such as global peace, international development – pluralism, civil society and others. Last year a similar agreement was signed by the Province of Alberta and the Ismaili Imamat.
To date, Portugal and Mali are the only two other countries that have a formal agreement with the Ismaili Imamat.
There are several dozen additional agreements between AKDN and various countries, UN and civil society institutions.
