Sports Diplomacy: Reminiscing the Golden Jubilee Games: Celebration Through Sport – “Goal Saving Ovation”

Flashback: Soccer in the Spotlight

1371The football (soccer) team from the United Arab Emirates received a standing ovation from the crowd as well as its opponent, Team Canada, after two spectacular saves by their goalkeeper.

The Canadians scored four times shortly after half-time giving them an insurmountable 4-0 lead. Both teams knew the likely outcome of the match. However when Team Canada got its next scoring chance, the UAE goalkeeper showed perseverance and skill that won him an overwhelming display of approval.

A Canadian player took a shot, and the ball hit the UAE cross bar. Another Canadian followed with an immediate shot. The UAE goalkeeper dove to make the save, but the ball bounced back to another Canadian player who once again took a shot.

In a dramatic move, the goalkeeper dove once again, protecting his goal a second time and flinging the ball out of bounds. The entire crowd stood up clapping and cheering with the Canadian players also applauding the persistence and talent of the goalkeeper.

The 2008 Golden Jubilee Games, held at Aga Khan Sports Centre in Parklands, Nairobi, Kenya was an epic event highlighting the talent of over 1,200 young Ismaili men and women from over 20 countries, selected from among 50,000 athletes at the local, regional and national levels from within their respective countries.

We bring you here links to the photo gallery and video of the opening ceremony of the games. We are also happy to inform you that some of Golden Jubilee Games events were graced by the presence of Prince Hussain.

  1. Of course, health is not static, but dynamic…. Therefore I shall speak to my heirs of the vital importance of exercise. And since to take joy in your activities is one of the secrets of health, I should counsel them to play games.

Naturally my heirs will be riders of horses. That is in the blood. The ‘horse and the rider’ have been the sign manual of my race for a thousand years. But I speak of concerted games.

Knowing something of tennis and a little golf, I can advise them to play those games. Knowing very little of cricket except as a spectator, I must be content to regard that great game with benevolent neutrality. But, play games! Play them joyfully, vehemently, with all your heart.
