The Art of Chivalry: Akhlaq-i Nasiri (Ethics of Nasir)

The Art of Chivalry

The art of chivalry is dependent on strength, courage, horsemanship, military command, and the protection of frontiers.

According to Nasir al-Din Tusi, it is one of the noble arts that provide an income.

Here, a young Mughal prince is depicted in a landscape, attended by his ministers and other mounted figures.

He is demonstrating his advanced skills in controlling a powerful horse while trying to catch a lance.

This colourful 16th-century folio depicts a scene from the “Akhlaq-i Nasiri,” a manuscript of ethics and conduct.
