Lisbon, Portugal – July 20, 2017: In a ceremony held this afternoon at the Palace of Belém, the President of the Republic, His Excellency Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa decorated His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan with the Grã-Cruz da Ordem da Liberdade – Grand Cross of the Order of Liberty.

Earlier in the day, at the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (UNL), the leader of the Ismaili Community was distinguished with the title of Doctor Honoris Causa, invested by the Rector of UNL, Professor António Rendas, with Padrinho as Dr. Francisco Pinto Balsemão in a ceremony co-chaired by His Excellency Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

Both ceremonies fit into the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of Prince Aga Khan, who celebrates 60 years as the spiritual leader of Ismaili Muslims around the world.
