Chicago Tribune: Princess Yasmin Aga Khan’s Rita Hayworth Gala marks 30 years of fighting Alzheimer’s

The Event: Thirty years of funding research aimed to cure a devastating illness culminated in a grand anniversary gala inside the Hilton Chicago on May 13, where more than 850 supporters affirmed their stand against Alzheimer’s disease.

Founded by Princess Yasmin Aga Khan in honor of her mother, the legendary Hollywood actress, Rita Hayworth, who succumbed to Alzheimer’s late in life, the Rita Hayworth Alzheimer’s Galas of Chicago, Palm Beach and New York Rita Hayworth, have raised $72 million towards to support efforts to find a cure.

 

 

Facts & Figures: The sixth leading cause of death in the United States, Alzheimer’s has increased by 89 percent since 2000, and today kills more than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined.

Every 66 seconds someone in the United States develops Alzheimer’s. Today, more than five million Americans are living with the disease, a figure that is expected to rise to 16 million by 2050.

Bottom Line: The event raised more than $1.1 million for the Alzheimer’s Association’s research toward a cure.
